Hi, my name in Frédéric Riel-Désilets and I'm studying Diagnostic Imaging right now. I made this glossary to help people understand or clarify some of the terms we use.
Angiography
noun
Examination by X-ray of blood or lymph vessels, carried out after introduction of a radiopaque substance.
Example: Coronary angiography is considered to be the gold standard for the detection of reperfusion as it provides an accurate visualization of the occluded IRA and predicts TIMI flow.
fr: Angiographie
Arthrography
noun
Radiographic visualization of a joint (as the hip or shoulder) after the injection of a radiopaque substance.
Example: For an arthrography of the glenohumeral joint, an anterior approach targeting the rotator cuff interval can be performed.
fr: Arthrographie
Artifact
noun
An artifact is a structure or an appearance that is not normally present on the radiograph and is produced by an artificial means.
Example: We can see an artifact on the lung radiograph for this patient.
fr: Artefact
Barium
noun
The chemical element of atomic number 56, a soft white reactive metal of the alkaline earth group.
Example: A mixture of barium sulfate and water, opaque to X-rays, which is swallowed to permit radiological examination of the stomach or intestines.
fr: Baryum
Biopsy
noun
An examination of tissue removed from a living body to discover the presence, cause, or extent of a disease.
Example: A biopsy is the only sure way to diagnosis most cancers.
fr: Biopsie
Chemotherapy

Colonoscopy
noun
A procedure in which a flexible fiber-optic instrument is inserted through the anus in order to examine the colon.
Example: In some cases they may provide enough evidence to confirm the diagnosis and are particularly valuable in elderly patients who are unable to tolerate bowel preparations or 'invasive' procedures such as colonoscopy.
fr: Colonoscopie
Endoscope
noun
An instrument which can be introduced into the body to give a view of its internal parts.
Example: Using a sub-millimetre fibreoptic micro-endoscope inserted through the ductal opening on the nipple surface, it is possible to obtain video images as well as ductal washings for cytological analysis.
fr: Endoscope
Ileum
noun
The third portion of the small intestine, between the jejunum and the cecum.
Example: As a result sticky, inspissated meconium blocks the lower ileum of the foetus.
fr: Iléon
Tomography
noun
A technique for displaying a representation of a cross section through a human body or another solid object using X-rays or ultrasound.
Example: For patients in whom ischemic stroke has been confirmed by computerized tomography scan, aspirin administered within 48 hours of the onset of stroke significantly reduces both death or dependency at 6 months and also the percentage of those making a complete recovery when compared to placebo.
